Just me rambling…

Posted under Lost thoughts

I have a new fence built for the router table, or at least it’s getting
built. Its awful stout. I used 12 pieces of 5/8s MDF stacked on top of
each other to get a fence that is just under 7 inchs tall. The base of the
fence is 8 inches wide and 48 inches long while the fence itself is closer
to 3 inches wide and 48 inches long. The base is held into the miter track
with a couple of miter bolts. I drilled a 2 inch hole at a 30 degree
angle from the middle of the fence on the back side to the bottom of the
fence on the front, right over the route bit. The end result is that I have
a 2 inch half circle over the router bit directly connected to my shopvac.
That should keep the saw dust in the cannister instead of on me! Tomorrow
I hope to install a pair of miter slots into the fence, one on the top and
one in the face of the fence itself. The one of the top is pretty useful for
things like chip guards and stop blocks. The one on the face is good for
feather boards and attaching other jigs. For example.
My box joint jig isn’t working out. The back piece isn’t strong enough to keep
the stock at a 90 degree angle, so I get really odd joints. With my new fence,
I will just build the jig to attach to the main fence and then I’ll have a very
large and strong back support to press stock against. I bought some of those
telescoping clamps to mount to the new jig, so that should make this stuff
stick in place pretty well.
On a side note, I am done with woodcraft. Im very young by woodworker
standards, I know this. Im used to being the youngest one in the crowd, that’s
no big deal. But I spent 45 minutes in an otherwise empty shop and could not
get a single soul to help me. When someone would answer my questions, they
would never look up at me, never point to the aisle I needed, one of them
actually went so far as to sigh like I was being a terrible burden because
he had to put down his magazine to ring me up. I have tried awful hard to
support local wood stores. I drive 50 miles to visit this particular shop, but
those days are now over. I can get the same stuff cheaper and without the
hassle online. Bye bye woodcraft.

Photo Issues

Posted under Lost thoughts

We had some issues rendering the photo page in IE.
The odd thing is that it only seemed to impact internet explorer. It’s
fixed now, but email me if it acts up again.

Noah Laughed!!

Posted under Lost thoughts

Noah laughed for the first time tonight. Jessi was upstairs and I was in the
basement with him and the dog. I was holding Noah on my lap when ping came
up. Noah saw the dog, made a little squeal and then full on laughed! I was
so excited I ran him straight upstairs to Jessi and told her “He just laughed!”
. Ping came up about then and gosh darn it if Noah didn’t laugh again, so
Jessi go to hear it. He has an awesome laugh, I hope he does it much more
often.

Warning, deep geek ahead!
Our server farm consists of 1 physical machine that I have logically
partitioned off into 6 virtual machines using
User-mode Linux. Each
machine is currently using a loopback file as its harddrive. While this
wasn’t a problem when I first did the design, I have some larger IO requirements
now that make loopback files impractical. The old files all existed on a
single RAID 1 partition and some of them got backed up nightly.
So now I have narrowed it down to 2 options. Create individual RAID 1
partitions and allow each UML to mount the partition directly, no loopback. Or
Create a single RAID1 mirror and then use LVM to divide partitions out. Then
allow each UML to mount the LVM directly.
The problem I have with the LVM approach is that I dont know what happens
if LVM craps out. Can I still mount that partition on its own? LVM
does have the huge advantage of snapshots though which make running backups
much easier. I was hoping to get started on this today, but it looks like
I have a bit more thought to put into this first.
