My family is nuts. We went to my parents house to celebrate my Mom’s, Dad’s and my birthday. We’re all kinda crammed together in October. The plan, so I was led to believe, was to get my folks out of the house for a little bit while family came in and turned it into a surprise party. Plausible enough. What ended up actually happening on the other hand was very different.
About the time I was supposed to be getting my folks out of the house, a 52 foot stretched F350 limo pulled into the drive (no small feat) where a driver hopped out and held open a door ever so expectantly. I just stared at him. I didn’t know anything about a limo, but my sister is in to that sort of stuff. Must be for Mom and Dad. Cool, I’m thinking, we’ll all go tool around in a limo for awhile while the party gets set up.
Mom climbs in first followed by Dad and I, then Noah, Heidi and Jessi. Jessi passes me the car seat, so I absorb myself in the advanced geometry and calculus that’s required to install one of those things. Car seat bolted in, Noah strapped into said car seat, the door shuts and there goes my wife and sister, running away from the limo and towards the explorer. At this point I realize,
I’ve been deceived.
The limo takes us on a short jaunt to the grain valley civic center where we pull into a surprisingly packed parking lot. James is standing outside with a camera (this can’t be good) and Heather is fluttering about like a butterfly cranked on sugar. We pile out of the limo, make our way into the civic center and find friends and family from all over the place lined up to congratulate us on our respective milestones. We were victims of one of the most elaborate and well executed surprise parties I’ve ever been to. Invitations and reminders went out almost a year in advance and not a single person spilled the beans. It was outstanding!
Thank you very much family and friends, you made the three of us feel like kings and queens for a night and gave us a party we’ll never forget.
